This section of the website has been introduced so you can see something of what’s going on behind the scenes at Grant McGregor. We are a growing Edinburgh business with real people at the helm….this is where you can get to know us that little bit better and find out some other things that are going on ‘behind closed doors’ at GM headquarters.
Grant McGregor reaches a half a million milestone!
Long ago, before the new Millenium was 10 years old in fact, Grant McGregor implemented a Professional Services ServiceDesk ticketing system to help us resolve and track our clients’ IT issues effectively. Since that date some 500,000 different support tickets have been logged onto this system for our clients! These range from automated 24×7 Monitoring Alerts and managed service issues from PCs & Servers, to human customer-logged tickets requesting some help.
Broken down this effectively equates to well over 200 tickets a day flowing through the ServiceDesk to be actioned by this Business As Usual team as everything is tracked until it’s successfully completed!
So we’d just like to say a huge well done to our ServiceDesk team for all their hard work and great customer service over these past 8 or 9 years since we put this vital engine at the heart of our business. Thanks are due not just for helping us reach this milestone, but in delivering the top notch levels of service that our clients tell us that they love…
Here’s to the next 500,000! 😊
Merry Christmas from Grant McGregor!
Last weekend the Grant McGregor team got together outside of work to enjoy a Christmas lunch, where we got the chance to relax, laugh, and reflect on what a fantastic year 2017 has been for us.

We’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of our clients – new and old – for helping make 2017 a great year for us. As well as our suppliers and the other contacts we have worked with throughout the year.
From all of us at Grant McGregor, we hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

10 Straightforward Social Media Tips & Tricks

With the help of Karin Dubois from the Network Group, we created a short guide to 10 tips & tricks for making use of social media for your business.
Advent Calendar Drive
The staff at Reed Technology with their incredible amount of donations to RHSC!
Last month we received an email from Reed – a recruitment company we’ve used before – asking if we could donate to their Advent Calendar Drive.
Reed Technology in Scotland had come up with a lovely initiative, working with The Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC) in Edinburgh to raise over 100 advent calendars for the childrenn who are in hospital over Christmas time.
Grant McGregor agreed that this was a fantastic and worthy cause so donated a dozen chocolate advent calendars to Reed for RHSC. Our contact at Reed, Donna Wilson, then messaged us to let us know that Reed had definitely exceeded their initial target, by donating well over 400 advent calendars as well as donations of toys and books for the children too.
Well done to everyone at Reed Technology for this fantastic drive and for managing to get so many donations for RHSC. We were glad to have helped out a little and it’s lovely knowing that even though these kids are in hospital over the festivities, they still get to open the doors on their advent calendar each day to find a little surprise, just like everyone else!

Grant McGregor Wins SolarWinds MSP Community Partner of the Year
Grant McGregor are proud to have received another fantastic award and IT industry accolade.
At the beginning of November, three of the GM team; Jon, David L & Paul attended the SolarWinds conference in Edinburgh. And at the very start of the day they were pleasantly surprised to be asked to pick up this prestigious honour as Community Partner of the Year.
Hitting the high spots!
Jon, David & a friend on top of Ben Nevis (above) and on top of the CMD Arête (left).
We like to get away from the computer screens from time to time…
A couple of weeks ago GM’s Directors Jon and David took on the challenge of climbing Ben Nevis.
It wasn’t an easy task, as they climbed the north face of the 4,414ft mountain via the infamous Ledge Route and then walked the precipitous Carn Mor Dearg arête to the top of Carn Mor Dearg – another mountain over 4,000ft!
But their hike over the rocky, rough and boulder terrain was worth it for the spectacular views from the top!
Well done guys – a brilliant achievement! 🙂
Fun at the Fringe!
It’s that time of year again… where the city is full of fantastic, funny, fabulous, fascinating and sometimes freaky events and entertainment… it’s the Edinburgh Festival Fringe!
And once again our office building (The Merchants’ Hall) in central Edinburgh has been transformed into a fringe venue. This August it has become the A-Club in the evenings. Run by ADMevents, the A-Club transforms the majestic Merchants’ Hall building into a unique event venue with live music, delicious food and cocktails.
The fringe does make for a very busy commute to work for many of us, but it’s not a big price to pay for the electric atmosphere in this exciting and exceptional city this month!

Fraud Prevention Seminar – 3rd December
Some of the team from Grant McGregor were involved in a Fraud Prevention Seminar at the start of the month at the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel in Edinburgh’s West End. Our very own Jon Towers took to the stage as a key speaker, along with Stewart Thom from the Royal Bank of Scotland. Jon shared some real life experiences of digital disasters, whilst offering advice on how to ‘Reduce Your Attack Surface’ in today’s digital world.
The Future of IT Security Conference
This month our Sales Account Manager, David Bell, headed to London for a conference on the future of IT security. The conference had an extensive program with lots of keynote speakers and breakout sessions, concentrating on thought-provoking discussions and engaging attendees with the practical resources and constructive tools to seamlessly integrate cutting-edge IT security solutions within organisations. Infinigate’s Channel Partner Event was a great opportunity to learn more about different vendors products and solutions and to also engage with relevant people on how we can deliver more value to our clients.

Welcome back Ciara!
We are pleased to see the lovely Ciara back at work this month after 5 weeks off traveling around Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia! Here’s a picture of Koh Nang Yuan in Thailand which was just one of the many places she visited on her travels.
Edinburgh Festival Fringe Fun
It’s that time of year when Edinburgh comes alive with hundreds of shows in the Edinburgh Festival. We are very lucky to have a wonderfully central venue for our offices and at this time of year a large part of our building (The Merchants’ Hall) is let out to a company called Spotlites Theatre. They provide a wide array of shows for children & young adults between the ages of 2-18 yrs. The scaffolding is up and the stage is set in venue 278 for the newbies at GM to experience this month long event for the first time. Some of the longer standing members of the team are less enthusiastic about squeezing through crowds and queues to get into the building for work…..there has to be some downside to working in such a fantastic building I guess! Lee joins the GM team as an IT Support Helpdesk Analyst.

8th July – Grant McGregor Making The News!
Very please with the PR this award has generated. How ironic that the front page of todays Evening News was about 13,000 email addresses being stolen by hackers from Edinburgh Council’s database.
Cyber security experts have warned local authorities “don’t stand a chance” against hackers after more than 13,000 e-mail addresses were stolen from council systems in a “malicious cyber attack”.
Flip to page 15… Capital tech firm scoops global IT award for best performing UK partner. It just shows you how important IT security is for all businesses, no matter how big or small!

Annual Team Building Trip
This month we journeyed up to Newtonmore in the highlands for our annual team building trip. We teamed up with Active Outdoor Pursuits for a weekend of canoeing, mountain biking, rock climbing, abseiling and orienteering! When we arrived we settled in and headed to the garden for a BBQ and some relaxation time before the days events on Saturday. It was an early start and the weather was less than impressive but we never let that dampen our spirits! Waterproofs on and teams worked out, it was time to get to work on the X-Adventure challenge the guys at Active Outdoor Pursuits had planned for us. It was a challenging day with lots of obstacles to overcome but with encouragement and working together as a team, we all made it to the finish line! Here are some pictures of our time in Newtonmore.
Check out our Facebook page for all of the photos from the weekend away.
GFI Partner Conference
As one of GFI Software’s key, strategic Gold Partners in the UK, Grant McGregor was invited to attend the Worldwide GFI Partner conference in Vienna earlier in June.
Jon was delighted that the team at Grant McGregor was awarded Best UK GFI Partner at the Conference for our unwavering commitment, strong technical ability and fantastic customer service record.

Whisky & Cheese Tasting Event
Some pictures from our whisky and cheese tasting event on Friday the 29th. A very enjoyable evening had by all. We would thoroughly recommend Justine Hazelhurst as a very knowledgeable and friendly host for the event and who would have thought that whisky and cheese would be such a good combination? Some lovely whisky’s and some amazing cheese that complemented each other so well!
Network Group Gala & Awards Ceremony
Early this month, Jon travelled to Brighton to attend the Network Group’s annual Gala and Awards ceremony. GM became a member of the group last year and we have been enjoying the benefits of access to the best pricing in the marketplace, which we can then pass onto our customers. NBG’s motto of ‘Strength in Numbers’ is very fitting, the collaboration with other members on business strategy, best practice, access to shared resources and training is hugely rewarding for our business…and, in turn, for our customers too.
Grand National Sweepstake
As a bit of fun around the office we had a little sweepstake for the Grand National… today we came into the office to find that Doug had romped home with the winner Many Clouds and bagged himself £30, while Donald scooped the 2nd and 3rd place winners giving him a prize of £20. Well done guys 🙂
We would like to say a warm welcome to Ciara who joined the team on the 1st of April. Ciara has joined us as a Sales and Marketing Intern and we are looking forward to seeing some fresh new marketing initiatives getting put into action soon. Please join us in welcoming Ciara to the Grant McGregor team 🙂
A Spring Clean at GM Headquarters
This week we had our carpets upgraded at GM Headquarters at the Merchant’s Hall and we are very pleased with the fresh new look. However, even a simple job such as this requires pre-planning so that the company stays operational for you, our customers.
Our rooms had to be completely clear of desks and equipment for the fitters, which in turn meant that our whole IT set up had to be taken out as well. Ensuring that everything is taken out correctly and put back where it should be is a task in itself.
We have helped many of our clients with moves, be it from moving desks around an office to moving offices completely to a whole new destination. Completing these moves, while ensuring as little disruption as possible to the day to day running of the businesses is challenging but we’ve had plenty of practice!
If you need help with moving workstations or even whole offices, we can help make this process smooth and stress free, while keeping your business IT operational. To discuss this in more detail please contact us on 0131 603 7910.
Happy 25th Birthday Dan
Today is our Daniel’s 25th Birthday… which means he is now old enough to drive the company car! Happy Birthday from all the team Dan 🙂
Dan’s good run was short lived as he hopped into the office on crutches this morning with severe ligament damage to his ankle after a football tackle went wrong.. Its no longer Dan ‘the man’, its ‘Disaster’ Dan! No football for 6 months…how is he going to cope!
Microsoft Certified – Daniel Taylor
After weeks of revision and preparation, our Dan ‘the man’ sat his Microsoft 70-410 – Installing and configuring server 2012 exam… And passed! Another certificate added to the wall and a relieved Dan can breath easy and have his evenings back for more leisurely activities…anything but studying. This qualification gives our clients reassurance and peace of mind that there equipment is being looked after by certified IT guys who know how to get the best out of the equipment. Congratulations from all the team Daniel, well done!!!
Congratulations Darren Smith
Congratulations to Darren Smith for becoming a dad for the first time… Baby Demi Smith was born on the 15th February weighing 7.5 lbs. Darren has been enjoying some paternity leave with the new arrival and will be back to work soon. Congratulations from all the team Dazza!

Dan, Doug & Donald’s Mountain Biking at Glentree
You might think they are crazy but some of our (more outdoorsy) team decided to take a trip up to Glentree for a spot of mountain biking. As you can see from the picture, there was plenty of snow about which made the bike ride all the more challenging for them. Whatever floats your boats guys!
Looking back at some of the posts we created in this section of the website since it was introduced in August has reminded us what a good year it has been!
We have seen growth and new additions joining the team, a new company car that cannot be missed and amongst other things, a team building weekend that will be difficult to beat….but we’ll certainly try!
During 2014 we also helped a number of you to start using Cloud services from Microsoft and others. We updated a whole lot of aging PCs that were still running on XP and we helped several of you to successful relocate to new offices – some just before Christmas! The GM team put industry-leading monitoring and protection defences in place for most of you, ensuring your IT infrastructure is safe and secure.
We would also like to thank all of our customers for making 2014 the most successful year in the companies 14 year history! We are delighted to have some great Edinburgh businesses, such as the Dominion Cinema, Marketing Edinburgh and George Christies joining us. We are also delighted to be working with Stoneywood Care and SCRT in the field of social care. It is a joy to be able to work with so many different types of people and companies, across many different sectors.
We are all looking forward to see what 2015 brings and welcome the challenges ahead and tackling them, face on as a team.
Christmas Night Out
Friday the 12th seen us head out for our Christmas night out. We embraced Christmas Jumper Day and made a donation to Save the Children for taking part. We all had our Secret Santa gifts to hand out and there were some really creative gifts! As our office humbug, Paul was especially pleased to have received some gifts that really got him in the Christmas spirit… The detail on the car he received was outstanding!
We then moved on to Chaophraya on Castle Terrace for a lovely Thai meal which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. We couldn’t recommend this restaurant more and will definitely go back! Great food, wonderful cocktails, amazing views and excellent service… all of that combined with the great company of all the team made it a very enjoyable evening for all.
Welcome Donald MacPherson
We would like to say a very warm welcome to the newest member of our team, Donald MacPherson! Donald is joining us as a Helpdesk Support Analyst and he joined us on our Christmas night out prior to him starting with us on the 15th December… and we are happy to say that experience did not put him off joining the team! Check out our ‘Meet The Team’ part of the website soon to have a read about Donald’s background and some of his fantastical facts! Please join us in welcoming Donald to the team, we are sure you will speak to him on the help desk soon 🙂

Spot the Difference? GFI MAX & Cloud Conference
David and Jon headed off to London for the GFI MAX & Cloud conference earlier this month, investing three days and two nights of jam packed information sharing and networking. Happily for them the conference wasn’t all technology and terminology. There was an excellent Dinner & Drinks event on the middle evening at which the hosts had organised for pinball machines, 1980s Video Games (like PacMan, Space Invaders and Galaxians) to be available to play and also laid on some more sociable entertainment in the form of three celebrity ‘lookalikes’. And it was very difficult to spot the difference…..to read Jon’s article about what went on at the conference please click here.
